3 events you don’t want to miss this Spring
Spring is around the corner and we are itching to get out and play. The #LalaboyPR crew is elated to be kicking off the Spring season with a roster of artistic and cultural projects that make us want to go around jumping and dancing on the streets.
As you know, the Lalaboy PR crew elevates projects, companies and clients that make our world better and more fun place to live in. In the throws of our current uncertain political context–we put our heart into working with artists and clients who are working to visualize a brighter future for us all.
Saturday, April 22: Cosa Nuestra : Pa’ La Ciudad.
One of these groups is the Cosa Nuestra Collective. This group of wildly talented Latinxs have come together to defy toxic anti-Latinx narratives. Old school style, marching into the future. They’re doing this by showcasing a bill of world-class talent at their upcoming Pa’La Ciudad event on April 22nd in Brooklyn. Founded by Manolo López and co-curated by Tita Garcia (with the support of Red Bull, thank you very much)–the event will delve deep into the history of the drum, a symbol of liberation since slave times, in celebration of Afro-Latinidad. Famed New York born Puerto Rican Poet and actor Flaco Navaja, will narrate the show taking participants on a journey through the history of the drum to salsa. Musical performances by Ilu Aye, IFÉ and ÊMINA. Tracks by DJ Christian Martir. Vanguard cocktails will be mixed by Leslie Cofresi and Roberto Berdecia, mixologists at award-winning San Juan based cocktail bar La Factoria. Culinary delicacies will be prepared by acclaimed chefs, including Maria Mercedes, Gallo Negro; Ibrahim Sanz, Haven Riverfront; Guillermo López, Le Bernardin; Esteban Muñiz, Wagamama. See the Cosa Nuestra page for more details. Access to this event is reserved for confirmed invited guests only.
Weekend, May 4-6: Superfine! Art Fair.
Next up, we have the Superfine! Art Fair. After achieving a runaway success at Art Basel in Miami, the Superfine! Art Fair comes to New York City to bring a well-priced and inclusive art collection experience to young professionals during Frieze week without the stuffiness of the art fairs of yesteryears. From May 4-7 prepare to have your artistic palette awakened as work from 50 international artists, 23 galleries and curatorial collectives and 27 independent artists come together for an event you will not want to miss! The fair, will occupy a multilevel location at 459 West 14th Street, a location that is managed by Jamestown Properties, the mastermind neighborhood-building team behind Chelsea Market and Brooklyn’s Industry City. If you are interested in engaging as a collector, or as a spectator–visit the Superfine! Art Fair website.
May 10-21: FUERZAfest 2017.
We’ll be closing out May by partnering with the Hispanic Federation to elevate Fuerza Fest, the first and only LGBTQ+ Latino film festival in the Northeast! The 12-day-long festival will explore race and LGBTQ+ issues through a provocative selection of films and a one-act play theater showcase, panel discussions, and art exhibits exploring intersectional issues ranging from undocumented immigrants, family rejection, religious conservatism to LGBTQ+ youth. Also, in light of the first anniversary of Pulse shooting, the festival will also remember the 49 victims through a series of artworks and a special event -including a panel with survivor Ricardo Negrón. Art and social justice in one stage? Yes, please.
Mark your calendars! Projects like these remind us why we do what we do. Spring and Summer vienen candentes. We are excited to share them with you! Come around and say hello if you do.
Here’s to Spring 2017! Se formó la primavera! More to come!
